Are You an “Almost Christian”?

In John 8:31–47, Jesus has a sobering conversation with a group of people who thought they believed in Him. These weren’t the Pharisees or outspoken critics—these were people who, on the surface, looked like they were on the right track. But as the conversation unfolded, Jesus revealed that their belief was shallow, their understanding of sin was skewed, and their connection to God was imagined, not real.
Many people claim to believe in Jesus, yet remain spiritually blind.
We live in a world full of labels—demographic labels, church backgrounds, family traditions—but when it comes to your soul, Jesus sees only two categories: those who are in Him and those who are not. The scary part? Some people appear to be genuine believers but are what Pastor Jeff called “almost Christians”—religious, moral, even theologically informed, yet not truly saved.
Jesus challenged His listeners:
Do you abide in My Word?
Have you been set free from slavery to sin?
Are you bearing spiritual fruit?
The challenge is clear for us, too. Being born into a Christian home, praying a prayer, or getting baptized are good things, but none of them are substitutes for genuine faith in Jesus and daily abiding in Him. True disciples know their sin, receive grace, and walk in truth—not perfectly, but purposefully.
Here’s the good news: “If the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed” (John 8:36). You don’t have to settle for cultural Christianity or spiritual confusion. Jesus invites you to real, transforming relationship with Him—one where you walk in the light, hear His Word, and bear fruit that glorifies the Father.
So ask yourself today: Am I abiding? Or am I almost? The difference isn’t minor—it’s eternal.
Join us this Sunday at Powell High School as we continue walking through the Gospel of John and pursue true discipleship together.
