We all need someone to lead us, protect us, and care for us—but not everyone who claims to be a “shepherd” has your best interest at heart. In John 10, Jesus gives us one of the most powerful images in all of Scripture: “I am the Good Shepherd.” With these words, Jesus reveals His heart, His mission, and His unique authority as the one true leader of God’s people.
In biblical times, shepherding wasn’t a clean or easy job—it was dangerous, gritty, and demanding. A good shepherd didn’t just cuddle lambs; he fought off predators, slept at the gate of the pen to protect the flock, and even risked his life for his sheep. That’s exactly what Jesus did for us. He knows His sheep by name, and His sheep know His voice. He leads us personally, protects us intimately, and provides abundantly.
Unlike false shepherds—those who exploit, mislead, or run when things get hard—Jesus laid down His life for us. He didn’t do it out of obligation but out of love, willingly taking our place on the cross. And He didn’t stay in the grave—He rose again, proving His power over sin and death and securing eternal life for all who follow Him.
So what kind of shepherd are you following? Have you been wounded by leaders or circumstances and tried to take the reins yourself? Jesus is calling you to trust Him. He’s the only door to abundant life, the only voice worth following, and the only shepherd who will never let you down.
If you’ve heard His voice, keep following. And if you haven’t yet responded, maybe today is the day to take that step. Let the Good Shepherd lead you—because in Him, you’ll find rest, purpose, protection, and eternal hope.
