Trusting the Promises of Jesus

We live in a world full of broken promises. Parents don’t always keep their word, marriages sometimes fall apart, and workplaces fail to deliver what they once guaranteed. Those broken promises leave scars. But in John 14:1–14, Jesus reminds His disciples—and us—that while people may fail, He never will. Jesus always keeps His promises.
As He prepared to go to the cross, Jesus knew His disciples were troubled. He comforted them with four truths about trusting Him:
1. Jesus Promises Us an Eternal Home (vv.1–3)
The disciples were anxious when Jesus said He was leaving, but He reassured them: “In my Father’s house are many rooms… I go to prepare a place for you.” Heaven is not wishful thinking—it’s a promise. For those who belong to Jesus, there is room in the Father’s house, and one day we will be home with Him forever.
2. Jesus Is the Only Way (vv.4–6)
When Thomas confessed confusion, Jesus declared, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” This isn’t narrow-minded—it’s the loving truth. Religion, effort, or good intentions can’t bring us to God. Only Jesus can, because only He died and rose again for our sins.
3. Jesus Reveals the Father (vv.7–11)
Philip asked to see the Father, and Jesus replied, “Whoever has seen me has seen the Father.” If you want to know what God is like, look at Jesus—His compassion, His truth, His power, and ultimately His sacrificial love on the cross. Get Jesus right, and everything else comes into focus.
4. Jesus Empowers Us to Do Great Things (vv.12–14)
Jesus promised His followers would do “greater works” than He did—not greater in quality, but in scope. After His resurrection, the gospel spread across the world. Today, we are part of that ongoing mission. Through prayer and the power of the Holy Spirit, God uses ordinary believers to share Christ, serve others, and see lives transformed.
Living with Confidence in His Promises
You may feel the sting of broken promises from people in your life, but Jesus will never fail you. He promises you an eternal home, He alone can save you, He reveals the heart of God, and He empowers you to do great things in His name.
So, live each day trusting that Jesus keeps His promises. Walk by faith, lean on His Word, pray expectantly, and bear witness to Him where He has placed you. And remember, one day He will wipe away every tear and make all things new.
Others may fail you. You may even fail yourself. But Jesus never breaks His promises.
